Abstract. The equations of motion of a nearly spherical gas bubble, expanding adiabatically through an inviscid fluid, are deduced when the bubble is projected initially vertically upwards. It is found that a small deviation of the initial shape of the bubble from the spherical form must be taken into account when there is a translational motion of the bubble centre. The early stage of the growth of this nearly spherical bubble motion with time is shown to be significantly influenced by the initial bubble translation.
