Abstract. A survey of the theory of functional differential equations, worked out by participants of the Perm Seminar, Russia, is presented. Examples of new approaches to some classical problems are demonstrated.

Editor's Note. This work is the last paper prepared by Professor N. Azbelev with his pupils and collaborators in 2006. Professor N.V. Azbelev passed away in November 2006 and had been a leading figure in the differential and integral equations profession for about five decades. At the time of his death, he was the Head of the Scientific Research Center for Functional Differential Equations, Perm State Technical University, Russia (since 1994).
The material of the article has been published in Russian in Vestnik Udmurtskogo Universiteta, No. 1 (2009), 1-23.
