AN ASYMPTOTIC PARAMETER EXPANSION METHOD (PEM) FOR THE SCATTERING OF SCALAR AND PLANE POLARIZED ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES BY SOME COMPLICATED CONVEX BODIES
Abstract
The magnitude of difficulties encountered in arriving at a mathematicaldescription of diffraction and the more general scattering problem increaseswith the irregularity and convexity in the shape of the obstacles. Aparameter expansion method (PEM) is developed here such that the scatteringpotential of a scalar wave or a plane polarized electromagnetic wave for aprolate spheroidal scatterer, elliptic cylindrical scatterer and ahyperboloidal scatterer is obtained as a parameter expansion of simplerconvex bodies (for which exact solutions are known) namely the sphere, thecircular cylinder and the circular cone respectively. A general approach forthe PEM has been presented such that scattering potential for complicated \pagebreak convex bodies with similar crossection (or that could be considered as suchafter some transformation), could be obtained.
