NEWTONIAN CONTINUUM MECHANICS

Abstract. The first axiom of Newtonian particle mechanics is enlarged to accommodate continuum thermomechanics under non-relativistic circumstances. Then, as is well known, Galilean covariance of the total energy equation yields the balance of forces. It is shown that axial group covariance of the same equation allows the derivation of an angular momentum equation to complete the ontological structure of Newtonian continuum thermomechanics.
